On an otherwise ordinary wall in Cardiff Bay, a shrine has stood for seventeen years – remembering one of the city’s most celebrated sons. He’s not a historical figure. He’s not a famous face. He’s not even a real person.

In 2006, Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood premiered, beginning a story in the Bay that would transcend fiction and move into reality. The death of fan-favourite character Ianto Jones in 2009 saw heartbroken fans leave a small, touching tribute against the wall that, in the fictional world of the series, was home to the Torchwood Hub.

Over the next seventeen years, Ianto’s Shrine would far outlive the programme that inspired it – with photographs, messages, flowers and tributes continually being left by visitors from around the world. But how did a spontaneous memorial to a fictional character become a permanent Cardiff landmark, and why does Ianto continue to mean so much to so many people?

Remembering The Man Who Never Lived tells the remarkable story of the fans who created and sustained the shrine, the character and television series that inspired it, and the enduring community in Cardiff that has grown around it.

Now, on the 20th anniversary of Torchwood’s premiere, the story comes full circle.
